NY Times Covers Former WL Client’s Journey from Conviction to Public Office: Calvin Duncan’s Exoneration and Election in New Orleans
In 2021, Calvin Duncan was exonerated after spending decades wrongfully incarcerated in Louisiana. Weixler Law LLC was honored to represent Mr. Duncan in achieving his exoneration, helping to overturn a wrongful conviction.
Following his release, Mr. Duncan continued his work in criminal justice reform and public advocacy. Late last year, he was elected Clerk of the Criminal District Court in New Orleans, winning approximately 68% of the vote.
Last week, Mr. Duncan was sworn in as Clerk of the Criminal District Court, marking a remarkable moment in his journey—from wrongful conviction to exoneration to elected public official.
However, his path to office did not end with the election.
In the months leading up to his swearing-in, legislation was introduced in the Louisiana Legislature that would eliminate the very position he had been elected to hold - an effort directed at keeping Calvin from taking office. The measure has passed the Louisiana legislature and awaits Gov. Landry’s signature.
